Most of the pieces in the museum's collections of freight cars came from southeastern railroads. The didn't all start out working in the south. The railroads represented in the collection include; the Atlantic Coast Line, Burlington and Northern Railroad, Chattahoochee Valley Railroad, East Alabama Railroad, Jefferson Warrior Railroad, Louisville & Nashville, Monon Railroad, Norfolk Western, Seaboard Coast Line, Southern Railway and the U.S. Army. There are also smaller, more specialized use companies in the collection such as Alabama Dry Dock & Shipbuilding, Leyland Steel Co., Jim Walter Resources, and Trinity Industries. Some of The list of car builders includes examples from Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing Co., International Car Co., Gantt Manufacturing., American Car & Foundry, and the Magor Car Corp.
