A Trip Back to Steam!
Take a trip back to the days of steam on the Shelby & Southern Narrow Gauge Steam Railroad! Enjoy the sights and sounds of an authentic steam locomotive as it pulls its coaches over 3/4 mile of narrow-gauge railroad. Passengers will enjoy sights such as "Shiner's Holler" and the legendary Gandy Dancer Gold Mine. As the engineer blows a low mournful whistle, Gentlemen are encouraged to remove their hats and pay their respect as we pass the grave of Casey Jones.

The Magic City Express
Steam locomotive No. 3 and her coaches formerly operated at the Birmingham Zoo as the "Magic City Express" from 1976 - 2001. Thousands of children enjoyed the sights and sounds of the steam locomotive as it chuffed past elephants, tigers, and zebras. Lovingly restored, the train now operates at the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum and is still very much an exciting adventure "for kids up to 80"!
Hours of Operation
Saturdays 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM - Trains depart "when you get on". Train ride lasts approximately 5 minutes.

Shelby & Southern Railroad Specific Policies
- Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Please keep all heads and hands inside the coach at all times!
- Watch your head and take your time boarding the coaches.
- Be prepared, the locomotive's whistle is a real steam whistle and can be loud.
